We went shopping to pick my a ring, and being very pregnant I had to get it up sized and they told us 3 – 4 weeks until we would get it back, which was very upsetting because we had decided to be engaged before we went away. One night I rang my partner saying that our three yr old little girl was going to stay at her nans for the night and would he like to go out for dinner? He said yes and that he would book some where. When he got home he wouldn tell me where we were going and and was all happy, but I just put it down to being home from work. When we left we pulled up to the one place we had never gone out for dinner before which was a nice surprise, the food was great. I asked him if he had heard anything about the ring and he said it would be another 2 weeks, by then I was really down, I wanted my ring,
So while we were waiting for our meals I was looking out the window in my own little world. I felt something hit my hand I looked down and saw a box just thrown at me. I smiled realising what it was and opened it. He asked me to marry and put the ring on my finger, I held all my tears back and said yes, the people in the place all smiled, it was such a shock as I thought my ring wasn’teven in the same town. It meant so much more that he had rushed home from work to see the jewllers because they rang him earlier that day, just so he could ask me that night.

It was a lazy Saturday morning, with no plans to do anything. I was having a long sleep in when Daniel woke me by suprise and said that he had thought of something we could do today. I was told to get dressed and ready to go out, as today we were going ring shopping!! And that was it, simple, but still romantic to me, and Daniel’s way to a tee.. and this way i got to choose my ring!

I was nervous all day while Steve was at work. It was Feb 9th 2008. I had bought his ring had it resized and went over and over of how I was going to propose to him. When Steve arrived home from work I was a wreck, he went and laid down and I just lay next to him talking dribble.
Finally I plucked up the courage (from goodness knows where) and got on my knees and asked him if he would marry me and produced the ring. He said “marry you” and all of a sudden I thought OMG hes going to say no. Then he grabbed me and said “of course I will”. We have set our date for May 1, 2009.

I think every girl dreams of the perfect romantic proposal but after 2 kids, a rather tight morgage and almost 7 event filled years together the romantic side of it all starts to get a bit fuzzy. Don’t get me wrong I still expected Shanyn to do the traditional things like ask my fathers permission to marry me and get down on one knee (sounds corney after all we’ve been through but it still meant something to me). My proposal was very spur of the moment but with alot of heart invloved.
Our first weekend away in just over a year, our friends were getting married in Cairns, someone elses wedding always got us talking about our own one day and thats, I guess, what started Shanyn thinking. Our friends had a beautiful ceremony on the beach followed by a gorgeous reception at a restaurant, again, right on the beach, it sort of set the scene for us, lots to eat and drink, we sealed the night with a moonlight dance and a promise to make our special day soon.
The next day was a tedious 4 hour trip home so we headed into Cairns Central shopping centre for a spot of window shopping (only window because I spent a packet making sure our one nights accomodation away was to die for) and also to let our rugrat wear himself out before the trip. I had just flipped through the local Cairns tourism book before we left our room and spotted an add for a beautiful jewellery store, which I always brought to Shanyn’s attention so when the time came he knew what sort of ring I really wanted, he suggested we go and have a look when we got to the shopping centre. After about an hour of wandering around we had completely forgotten about the jewellery store and had focused on what we were going to have for lunch.
Just by chance our rugrat ran off and as I caught him I realised I was standing infront of the store I had seen in the book, Shanyn told me it was a sign (of what I don’t know) and that we should go in and have a look at some rings, I jokingly said that if the ring I really wanted was in the window I would go in, try it on but he would have to buy it for me right there and then. Would you believe it was…… I have always dreamt of having a heart shaped diamond ring and right there in the window infront of me was a single solitare heart shaped diamond ring, well that was it I had it on my finger in seconds.
We both stood there (child in tow) just staring at this ring, the store owner sized my ring finger and told me that it was meant for my finger, we both laughed and then after getting all the details of this ring quietly left (without saying much, I was still in aw of it all) and went and had some lunch. Over lunch we joked about how nice the ring was and how our friends wedding was just perfect, our lunch came out and whilst our son played in his highchair we continued to just chat about how we wanted our wedding to be. Shanyn sat back for a few minutes and was really quiet (unlike him) finally he said “Cate lets do it” which of course took me completely by surprise and I said “Let’s do what?” he said “Let’s get marrried, what do you think?” so I said “Um are you proposing to me now?” he said “Well yes I think I am” holding my hand. Thats when the shock really set in with both of us I think, we practically ran from our seats to pay the lunch bill and back down to the jewellers, the store owner was so excited to see us again and when we told her what had just happened she was even more excited, I tried the ring on one more time just to make sure and then we paid for it.
The only really sad part to this story is that the ring never came home with us, as I needed a different size ring and we were in Cairns not at home the ring had to stay in Cairns, it was to be posted (registered mail of course) back to us when it was ready but now here I stand with my ring safely on my finger (only a few days old) and have been told by Shanyn to organise a babysitter for tomorrow night, he has decided to take me out for a romantic dinner and to ask me a really important question even though I have the ring on my finger. Oh yeah and he did ask my dad permission but I’m still waiting for the bended knee
